Reflection

Through project 2, I felt that the starting introduction of my group's video might suit a TV drama more as it is very long.

Working a in a group is pretty tough. Everyone has different styles, different expectations for themselves. I believe that I have been quite harsh in trying to get people to work.

Though, the final film does not meet my expectations, I still felt that I have done my part. I manage to explore illustrative animation. Using previous experiences while experimenting with various effects, it has become natural to me, by fetching techniques from my own knowledge that I develop myself, to put it into use for project 2.

I still yet to find a better way to solve camera restrictions, as rotating the camera controls totally messes up my composition. The only way I know about is to pre-compose the the current camera with the other layers as 1 composition, and create another camera for the following sequences.

Similar to project 1, there were a lot of thinking to be done to create a strong opening sequence that is unique.

A rap up of 3DSFX, it has been a very useful module for me, as my main goal of joining IMI, is truly to learn more about 3D and creating special effects. I definitely would apply this skills in other work in future.

1 of my dreams would be using AE to create a promotional video for a future shop that me and my sister would like to invest on. And also using AE to create animated decoration to be displayed on the walls of the shop. A enhancement to the displays, would probably be interactivity. Customers can choose the mood of the display for their own preference. I believe that 3DSFX would definitely benefit me in all aspects of work.

The Ending Sequence

The last scene ends as the camera moves upwards to the sky. During our filming, I accidentally tilt the camera upwards too much, that it captured the sunlight, which caused a light beam effect to appear.

I straight away found inspiration to use that scene to create a transition to the ending sequence.

Using light sweep effect to rotate in direction, increase in intensity and width to cover the whole screen.

Using edited footage from my teammates effect, I gave the effect a different look, by adding cartoon effect and colorama effect to threshold the colors. I also froze the footage to a certain point to get a still image. The credits is then added in various positions.

Using an external camera to create transitions from different credits scenes, by swinging the camera to different points.

I also enhance the 2nd credit scene with liquidfy effect, so that it looks as if it is slightly animated.

The Awaken Scene

This scene was done using only masking , expression and slowing down time.

I remember that I watched such a effect before in some drama series few years ago.

It shows the eye led of a person twitching. And twitches slowly for the first few blinks, and everything in the environment slows down and picks up speed.

Creating a eye led shape using 2 mask on a black solid. Feather the edges to give a more realistic look. Then animate the center point of both mask to close and open.

Re-composite the layers and duplicating the video. So that 1 of the layers can be slowed down and a wiggle expression is added to create a shaking effect, this is because the father was shaking the son. The normal speed layer, logically creates the feel that the son has fully woken up.

The Recall Scene

This scene shows the father recalling wad happen during the accident.

It consist of a spinning wisp effect and spinning images using expression.

The spinning wisp effect is tracked on to the movement of the fathers' head. I added logical opacity change, so that it looks like it gradually appears.

Images spin towards the center of the father's forehead and disappears. This is done using time* expression on the rotation of the images. And also tweaking the position and scale of the images.

I still feel that this recall effect needs more refinement, but I have not thought of any refinement currently that can enhance the look.

The Title Sequence

As all movies always start with a animated logo appearing.

It inspires me to create 1 for my group. It features a door opening, and 3 camera man's silhouette that I have illustrated, jogs out from the left. The name of the group drops down soon after the camera man animation stops. The logo then fades away to my opening scene.

The beauty of fine arts is to tell a story through a still image. However, I feel that I am always limited to portraying more emotions while doing so during my art classes in secondary school. I always wanted to use illustrations to tell a story. Thus, I decided to animate a flow of illustrations that I have hand drawn, and enhanced using photoshop. Using after effects allows me to create a visual impact to tell a story.

I am very inspired by this opening sequence from the movie "Catch Me If You CAN".
However, it would take a lot of time to actually be able to use after effects to animate the characters. Thus I only did a small part of hardcore animation for a few secs for my opening sequence. Where the rest of the parts were using linear wipes or basic transitions.

Using various methods that I have learn and experiment to create randomness to enhance a mysterious effect of the couple flowing out. This effects were scale wipe, turbulence displace, and linear wipe.

Using a external camera method that I have learn during project 1 to control the camera to zoom into the hands of the couple and transits to a close up shot of the hands.

The camera will then follow the movement of a small root plunging out from the hands. Using linear wipe to create a growing effect of the root. The root slowly forms small routes, depicting the life of the couple, and slowly forms a silhouette of the couple carrying a baby.

I then came across camera movement complications, due to technical difficulties to place images for the next image to flow out. Pre-composite the layers and add a new camera to reanimate the camera movement to continue with the flow, which grants me more ease to animate my title sequence.

The new camera continues to move, as a road accident starts to flow out. This is where I want to illustrate the death of the mother.

The road continues and flows out to a graveyard, depicting the father bring the son to pay their respect to the mother.

I drew a bigger tombstone that pushes its way into the scene, to create a zoom in transition to focus on the 2 character. The son watches the father cry, as he was too young to understand what happened. Animating the tears to twirl and curl to flow out of the father's eyes and drops from the face, was the most difficult problem that I came across. At first I animate it to just literally drop from the eyes. But soon, I remembered that I could alter the shape of the tear using turbulent displace and animate the tear to swing from left to right a little before dropping off and scaling into a bigger tear.

This tears the drops down and forms a puddle of tears. Initially, the puddle of tears was just a plain puddle image that I drew. But using the ripple effect, I could alter it to animate like real water animation.

Then animating the layer to scale up and rotate upwards to cover the whole camera screen into a black screen. A extra tear drops down again. However this special tear was done using a photoshop image that I created using the footage that was going to appear after the title sequence. The photoshop image is then altered into a round looking liquid, using CC lens effect. Controlling the size and convergence of the lens effect, to form back the layer to its original state, which is the father holding a handphone. Controlling both position and scaling, to enhance the animation of this special tear to look as if its really dropping from above and plunging into the puddle of tears.

After the tear forms back into its original state. The father silhouette breaths out a black smoke generated using particles effect, which is tilted and altering gravity to form a curve smoke and linear wiping with turbulence displace. The smoke forms the short film title "Last Breath".

There are also some credits that will introduce the actors in this short film. The credits are done using smoke generated particles, and linear wiping with turbulence displace as well.

The scene fades off to the footage. Using the converting scene from day to night tutorial to create a evening tone to the footage that are mask together to form 1 composition. Tracking 2 adjustment layers consisting of light ray and lens flare to the motorcycles' light to add detail to the evening environment. Increasing the intensity of the lens flare over time as it comes closer to the camera.

The problem faced in this scene, was masking the movement of the father, as there were no green screen available for us to use. I have to make sure that almost 1-3 frames, the mask is kept as close as possible to the father.

The collision scene also consist of the light shining effect that has its source light infront of the father. The scene timing is also being extended to slow down the speed of the video.

            Project 2 Post-Production

In this process, my group member Sam has came out with a story that we all agreed on. However, as it was the month of fathers' day, I ask to tweak the story line so that the story shows the undying love of a father for his child.

            Characters involve:
            Son
            Father
            Snatch thief

            THE FINALIZED STORY: Last Breath

One morning, a man wakes up from a nightmare. He gets up as usual to fix breakfast for his son. As he was walking towards the kitchen, he realized that his son was sitting at a corner of the kitchen and crying away. He asks his son why he was crying.

However, his son did not reply him. Not being able to get an answer, he decided to continue to his daily routine. He came across a news paper beside the boy, and picked it up, only to found out that there was a report about his death.

He rubbed his eyes, and check if he was still having the nightmare. Having to confirm that he had already died, he totally could not face the truth. Suddenly, he recalled that he was involved in an accident in his “nightmare”.

He began to feel the sadness and sorrow, as he starts to cry as he bends down to console his son.
Years past and he continues to linger around, and watches over his son. One day, a suspicious looking man armed with a knife started following his son, as his son was on the way home.
Suddenly the man pounce onto his son and tried to rob his son. His son freaks out and tries to struggle away from the snatch thief. The father watches the struggle between his son and the thief helplessly as he thought that he could not do anything to save his son as he was dead. The father began to feel anger and frustration as he clinches his fist.

The suddenly, time froze and his hands started to glow and streaks of lights began to burst out of his palms. The lights streaks began to shatter surrounding glass. He began to realize that he was able to force the thief away from his son. He pushes away the man.

However, he could not stop the thief from harming his son in time. The thief had already stabbed his son. Though he began to feel weak, he finds his last breath to crawl forward to hold his son, who was laying on the floor. The father began to slowly appear in his sons’ vision of sight. His son smiles and hugs his father as he saw his father once again.

They started to disintegrate together, flowing towards the sky, leaving the son’s dead body on the floor. It was an unexpected twist of a father and son’s reunion.
